(Hartford, Conn. WTIC)-The co-chair of the legislature's Judiciary Committee, Bridgeport State Representative Steve Stafstrom, calls the Clean Slate measure before the House today nation-leading criminal justice reform.
If approved and signed by the Governor, the measure would erase the record of 300-thousand Connecticut residents with misdemeanors and low-level felonies.
Removed from the measure, says Stafstrom, are assaults on certain individuals including the elderly, blind, pregnant and disabled. Certain firearms charges have also been withdrawn.
Stafstrom says two separate studies show approval would enhance Connecticut's economy and have a very low rate of those offenders committing another crime.
The measure would be enacted January 1, 2023.
