(HARTFORD, CONN. WTIC) - October 3rd through the 9th marks National Fire Safety Week and Connecticut officials say learning the sounds of your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms could save lives.

Smoke alarms make a continuous alarm or series of three long beeps. Carbon Monoxide Alarms beep four times in rapid succession.

"We want to encourage people to evacuate the home and call 9-1-1 when the alarms sound, even if you don't see fire. It could be in another part of the home or in a concealed area," Alan Zygmunt, Program Manager at the Connecticut Fire Academy, said.

Carbon monoxide detectors are important too because CO is colorless and odorless, Zygmunt said.

Tenants and home owners are reminded to check the back of the detectors. On it, you'll find the manufacture date, Zygmunt said. If it's ten years old, replace it, he said.

National Fire Safety Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 that killed three hundred people.
