(HARTFORD, CONN. WTIC)-As yellow school buses roam neighborhoods retrieving students, a child safety advocate reminds parents and drivers to remain vigilant.
Safe Kids Connecticut Executive Director Amy Walker says parents need to walk their children to show them the bus stop. Further she says make sure they wait at least six feet from the curb, waiting for the bus to stop. Walker says for students who learned remotely last year the bus routine is either a new experience or needs refreshing.
Walker says drivers need to be extra attentive. Her advice: be aware of your surroundings before driving and use your back-up cameras.
Some of the SUVs she says, make it more difficult to see a small child.
Walker says drivers face many distractions and ignoring your phone ensures a safer drive for the motorist and student.
