(Hartford, Conn. WTIC)- After three years of debate, a legislative committee has approved a measure stripping the religious exemption for vaccine for certain students, sending it to the full floor.

The measure passed the Public Health Committee which endured  hours of debate and voluminous written testimony. Republicans countered more time should have been given to  such a  critical issue.

The measure covers 70 different doses, but not the one for COVID-19.

The state has 95-percent compliance with the vaccine, with about 100 schools failing that standard. Opponents argue with high compliance, the state is not facing a health crisis. Under the measure about ten thousand students would be prohibited from attending schools.

But  proponents argue that parents have a responsibility to get their child vaccinated  to protect the public.

The measure passed along party lines. It now needs House and  Senate  approval.
