(HARTFORD, CONN. WTIC)-As the state prepares for the effects of Hurricane Henri, an official at the Connecticut Fire Academy offers tips on the proper use of generators.
Alan Zygmunt says it's essential that generators are always operated outside the home and far away from it. That's because of exhaust gasses and to prevent Carbon Monoxide from entering the home.
With the potential for heavy rain, Zygmunt also suggests that any outside cords are covered at the connection.
Other suggestions include extinguishing a candle when you leave a room. Additionally, Zygmunt reminds homeowners to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
