Aaron Hicks late scratch from Yankees lineup with bruised shin

Aaron Hicks was a late scratch from the Yankees lineup on Tuesday, with the team announcing that the center fielder was removed due to a bruised shin, which he suffered on Sunday.

“Outfielder Aaron Hicks was scratched from tonight’s game with a right shin bruise that he suffered in Sunday’s game,” the team announced shortly before Tuesday’s series opener against the Rays.

Hicks fouled a ball off his shin in the eighth inning of Sunday’s series finale against the Nationals, and was down for an extended period of time before he shook it off and worked a walk. He stayed in the game and advanced to second when Gleyber Torres grounded out in the following at-bat.

Hicks has struggled badly to start the season, but has batted .370 with a 1.040 OPS over his last nine games, raising his season batting average from .139 to .198 in that span.

Clint Frazier was put into the lineup to account for Hicks’ absence, sliding into left field with Brett Gardner moving into center.
