Aaron Boone spoke to reporters prior to Wednesday’s spring training game against the Blue Jays, and gave updates on two banged-up Bombers.
Kyle Higashioka and Miguel Andujar are both still receving treatment for their injuries, but Higashioka could be back in the lineup on Saturday as long as he continues to progress and feels no more soreness in his side, which led to the backup catcher being scratched from Monday’s lineup.
“Higgy had a good day yesterday,” Boone said. “He didn’t do anything as far as baseball activities, but he did some gym stuff, did treatment, was asymptomatic, so optimistic…I think he’s scheduled to go [this] Saturday in Sarasota. So that would be the hope.”
Higashioka landed on the IL last year with an oblique strain, and he has become even more important to the team after third-string catcher Robinson Chirinos suffered a fractured wrist, but it looks like Higashioka avoided a similar injury to last season.
“We’ll see where we are these next few days, if we’re able to ramp up and hopefully some baseball activities a little bit today and then Friday ahead of that,” Boone said.
As for Andujar, who has been dealing with hand and wrist soreness and saw a specialist on Monday, the outlook isn’t quite as optimistic, as the once promising rookie continues to battle injuries since his breakout 2018 season.
“Miggy’s doing better, not hitting or anything yet, but I know there was improvement from a symptom standpoint yesterday, but still in treatment mode there,” Boone said. “He was out taking ground balls yesterday. I feel like the needle is moving a little bit, but nothing imminent as far as getting out and playing.”
Even when healthy, Andujar would likely be on the outside looking in for a spot on the Opening Day roster.
