Brian Cashman spoke with reporters on Friday afternoon before the Yankees’ series opener against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, and defended the organization’s decision to keep the red-hot Jasson Dominguez in the minor leagues.
The Yankees GM said that the team believes Alex Verdugo is the option in left field that they believe currently gives them the best chance to win, and the top prospect Dominguez won’t be promoted until he has an avenue to play every day.
Reacting to those comments, Sal couldn’t help but wonder what the Yanks are seeing, or need to see to finally give Dominguez consistent playing time over Verdugo, who has been struggling mightily for months.
“What does that say about Dominguez? Verdugo...he’s been God awful for the better part of three months, like one of the worst players in the sport statistically,” Sal said. “You’re telling me that guy gives you the best chance to win over a prospect who hit another home run last night and has been raking?
“Maybe the Yankees think they see something that they’re unsure about how Dominguez is gonna work out here.”
BT made it clear that he would want Dominguez called up, even if the Yankees continue to prefer Verdugo in left field. But it doesn’t seem like that will be happening with just weeks to go in the regular season.
“I would rather him play twice a week than no times a week,” BT said. “If he starts twice a week and pinch hits or gets in a game late, and he’s around Judge, Soto, and Stanton...I think there’s a transition. A slower transition is better than not being here at all.”
