“I seem to have a very different read from the rest of civilization on what Brian Cashman said yesterday.”
Those were Brandon Tierney’s words on Thursday about Cashman’s presser on Wednesday, noting that nothing means anything until it comes to fruition this offseason, but this is what he thinks he heard between the words:
“For the first time, Hal will no longer tolerate this,” BT said. “Hal is a businessman, and the Yankee brand right now has basically become a joke.”
Sal could only think of 1987 Topps baseball cards when BT whipped out names from the late-80s and early-90s swoon like Stump Merrill, Melido Perez, and even Alvaro Espinoza – but while those teams were “still the Yankees and closer to Mantle and DiMaggio then it was now,” this group is far from it.
“Had the Yankees lost last night, it would have been 10 games, the longest losing streak since 1913,” BT said. “Just a little perspective: New Mexico and Arizona became states in 1912, that’s how long ago that was.”
And after Sal Licata joked that “I don’t think there is anyone still alive to have seen it,” BT finished his thought on ownership coming to a crossroads.
“The point is that Hal is at the end of the rope,” BT replied. “He’s not going to react the way we want him to, pounding the table and cursing or doing something cavalier like his old man, but this is going to be as different an offseason as the Yankees have had in a long time, because they’re finally doing a 180.”
Sal’s thought?
“I think that’s based off of hope – I wish I had reason to believe that’s the case, but I don’t see it,” Sal said. “I heard Cashman take accountability and say he was going to try to fix it – but he said HE. And how is he going to do that?”
If this were the old Yankees, Sal thinks Stanton, LeMahieu, and some others would be gone, with Ohtani, Yamamoto, and some other prized free agents would be coming in. But this is the 2023 Yankees, with a different Steinbrenner at the helm…and it’s just not going to happen.
“You think we’re going to get back toward that? That’s saying something; you have faith in your team that I do not,” Sal said. “I think we’re going the way of the ‘80s. They know they’re in a mess and know they need significant change, but they won’t make enough moves to do it. I don’t know if they have the wherewithal and the guts and smarts to do it.”
