Jerod Mayo announces starting QB for preseason finale

Ahead of Friday’s practice at Gillette Stadium, head coach Jerod Mayo announced who will be starting at quarterback on Sunday for the Patriots.

To the surprise of no one, nine-year veteran Jacoby Brissett will get the start.

And even though this is a final preseason game, when asked if the starters would only be playing one series, Mayo said, “No, we’re going to play.”

So for Patriots fans - if that impacts your decision of whether or not to stay up to watch this game (Sunday at 8:00 p.m. on NBC and Peacock), keep that in mind!

Something else to keep in mind - Mayo told the media that all four quarterbacks will play.

“Jacoby is going to start the game off,” said Mayo. “Drake [Maye] will play as well. Joe [Milton III] will play as well. Bailey [Zappe] will play. We do have some players dealing with small things that probably won't play and get ready for the regular season – some of our proven players.”

Having all four quarterbacks appear is notable, given that keeping all four quarterbacks on the roster past Tuesday’s roster cut-down day feels like an unlikelihood for any modern NFL team. Generally speaking, most teams will keep three quarterbacks at the most.

But Mayo made a point to emphasize that these games, while they don’t count, “matter.”

And for a player like Zappe, who has very clearly fallen to the bottom of the quarterback totem pole after a meteoric rise during his rookie season in 2022, positive reps on Sunday would help him garner more positive game tape as he inevitably starts looking for his next career stop.

“This game, we say it doesn't count, but it matters,” said Mayo. “I think there are still a few positions where it's a battle. We've been talking about competition all year, and that's still my message right now.”

Battling and competition did not appear to be at the forefront of importance for Friday’s practice, as it was a light day for the team overall. They weren't in full pads, and spent a lot of time working on special teams, as well as individual group drills.

This type of pace was to be expected, as Thursday’s practice appeared to be the longest of the training camp season so far.

Friday also marked the final practice where media was permitted to watch in its entirety. Mayo made it a point to mention this off the top of his pre-practice media availability.

“I heard this is your last day that you guys would be able to be out here all practice,” said Mayo. “I'm going to miss you guys during practice. But I appreciate all you guys and the cooperation.

“Hopefully, it’s been smooth for you guys.”

Yet another reminder of the differences between Camp Mayo and Camp Belichick, as the open practice portion of preseason comes to a close.
