6 rings: Reacting to Bill Belichick's letter to Patriots fans, Bill O'Brien to Boston College?
Steve Belichick's time coaching with the New England Patriots is coming to an end.
According to multiple reports, the eldest Belichick son is headed to the University of Washington to become the Huskies' next defensive coordinator.
Belichick, along with Patriots running backs coach Vinnie Sunseri, interviewed with new Washington head coach Jedd Fisch last week in Seattle for positions on his defensive staff. Fisch, who was hired by the Huskies in January following Kalen DeBoer's departure to Alabama, coached with Belichick and Sunseri in in 2020 when he served as New England's quarterbacks coach under OC Josh McDaniels.
The 36-year-old Belichick son officially began working with the Patriots in 2012 when he was hired as a defensive assistant on his father's staff. He then became the team's safeties coach in 2016 before moving to outside linebackers coach in 2020, a position that led to his close relationship with now-head coach Jerod Mayo. Belichick, working with Mayo, was New England's defensive play caller over the last four seasons.
It was reported last month by Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer that both Steve and Brian Belichick had been “offered the opportunity to return to the [Patriots] for 2024,” something Mayo later confirmed, and it was then reported by ESPN's Mike Reiss that if Steve were to return to Foxborough, it would potentially be in an "assistant head coach/senior advisor" type of role.
However with his father Bill likely missing out on the 2024 NFL head coaching cycle and DeMarcus Covington being named New England's defensive coordinator last week, the elder Belichick son will be taking a different route. He heads to the college ranks for the first time in his coaching career.
Update: Former Patriots running backs coach Vinnie Sunseri will also join the UW defensive staff with Steve Belichick, according to The Athletic.
