The Giants reportedly signed a wide receiver out of Monday morning's workouts, but it was not Odell Beckham Jr.
According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, Big Blue has agreed to a one-year deal with Braxton Berrios, giving New York a clear replacement for Gunner Olszewski, who is set to undergo surgery on his injured Achilles. Berrios has special teams experience and can fill the kick returner role vacated by Olszewski's injury, while also bringing some potential slot receiver help for Jaxson Dart.
The Giants held a workout for Berrios as well as Beckham and JuJu Smith-Schuster, and of the three, Berrios seemed like the best candidate to replace Olszewski. Still, the prospect of a reunion with Beckham had many fans dreaming of the former Giants star back on the roster. The signing of Berrios at least makes that prospect much more cloudy, as roster spots are not aplenty.
Berrios was one of the best kick returners in football with the Jets in 2021, averaging a league-best 30.4 yards per return. He averaged 27 yards per kick return in just three opportunities for the Texans last season. He was used on punt and kick returns during his two years with the Dolphins as well. Health has been a concern in recent years for Berrios, who has appeared in just 10 games over the past two seasons.
Big Blue is bringing in some special teams help in Berrios, who has had success as a kick returner.
