Joe Schoen, now officially the Giants new general manager, will look to lead the franchise to its first Super Bowl in over a decade and out of one of the darkest eras in team history.
Luckily for Schoen, he has a big name in his corner who won two Super Bowls during his time with Big Blue.
Schoen, a former scout with the Dolphins, saw his time in Miami overlap with Bill Parcells, who was the team’s vice president of football operations during Schoen’s tenure from 2008-2010. Parcells, a legendary Giants head coach, had a hand in leading Schoen to New York to replace Dave Gettleman.
“He told me it’s the best job in the league,” Schoen said of his conversation with Parcells. “That was some of the advice that he gave to me when I talked to him.”
Schoen often found himself furiously writing and typing whatever he would hear Parcells say when it came to coaching and building a football team, and he will continue to use Parcells as a mentor in his new role with Parcells’ former team.
“He was a great teacher,” Schoen said. “I got him on the back nine of his career. He was a constant teacher, always talking to me.
“All the stories he has, he understood personnel. Philosophically, maybe he’s a little different…but I learned a lot from him. How to build a roster, what to look for in different positions, what to look for in head coaches.”
Schoen will now look to replicate Parcells’ success in New York, only in a different role. And if Schoen ever wants to run an idea by Parcells, he knows he is only a phone call away.
He might not even have to pick up and dial the phone himself.
“I love Coach to death,” Schoen said. “He’s been awesome to me. He still calls me every now and then, and I can pick up and call him. He’s not afraid to call on a Monday after a game and give his two cents on the roster and what we need when I was in Buffalo. Ton of respect for Coach, and I love him to death.”
