Aaron Rodgers downplays idea of wearing an un-retired No. 12 for Jets

If you remember way back about six weeks ago, Joe Namath appeared on Tiki & Tierney when word first started circulating about Aaron Rodgers maybe coming to the Jets, and Broadway Joe gave A-Rod his blessing to keep wearing No. 12 – retired for Namath – if that happened.

“I’m a big Rodgers fan, and I noticed he wears No. 12 – if we get him on our side, is he still going to be wearing No. 12? Because that was retired many years ago,” Namath said. “Oh yeah, I’d sure like Rodgers, if he’s there, I want him to wear his number! We establish ourselves and have a real respect for our numbers. Aaron Rodgers, gosh almighty, it’d be great to have him in New York!”

Well, shortly after he made his intentions known Wednesday on the Pat McAfee Show, that he wants to come to the Jets, Rodgers was asked about that – and downplayed it, for now.

“Listen, with respect to the emotions, I think there will be time for those conversations down the road,” Rodgers said. “Today was a day to talk about the past and give an update about what’s going on. I’ve seen what Joe said, but there will be time to talk about it down the road.”

Namath’s 12 was retired in 1985, and is one of just five the Jets have honored that way – but if you have the chance to pass it on to another Hall of Fame (bound) quarterback?

Rodgers wore No. 8 when he was at Cal, and it may be easier to bribe…err, offer Elijah Moore a nice gift to give up his number than un-retire one that was taken out of circulation four decades ago – but as Rodgers said, there’s a time and a place to discuss that.
