Zach Wilson is the Jets starting quarterback moving forward, but Evan still wants a veteran to be brought into the fold ASAP.
Who would his top choice be at this point? He doesn’t believe the Jets will be able to trade for a quarterback currently on an NFL roster, so they will have to sign one “off the street.” Based on the options available, Evan wants a former Super Bowl champion.
“The truth is, they have to have a backup plan. If Zach Wilson stinks…they cannot just run him out there with the talent on this roster,” Evan said.
“They gotta get a veteran quarterback in here immediately. Making a trade for a quarterback on someone else’s roster is unrealistic. Jerry Jones even said it. They’re not trading Cooper Rush. The Giants aren’t trading Tyrod Taylor. I don’t think teams are in a rush to trade their backups. The more I think about it, and it is not perfect, the guy I’d probably go with right now, immediately…and have him be my backup, is Nick Foles.”
Foles played just three games with the Colts last season, and one with the Bears the year before. His career took a nosedive after his improbable Super Bowl run with the Eagles, but Evan says Foles’ career apex is something the Jets could benefit from.
“Him doing it as a backup and winning a Super Bowl in Philadelphia matters,” Evan said. “I understand that everywhere else Nick Foles has gone, he has been terrible…I understand this offensive line might not do the greatest job protecting him. But of all the options out there - are you really gonna tell me Chad Henne is a better option?”
