Jets hiring Darren Mougey as new general manager: Report

The Jets have reportedly found their new general manager to orchestrate their latest revamp.

According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, followed up by Adam Schefter of ESPN, Gang Green has hired Broncos assistant GM Darren Mougey to replace Joe Douglas, forming the team’s new leadership tandem with Aaron Glenn being named head coach earlier this week.

New York conducted a second interview with Mougey on Thursday, as he was joined by Trey Brown and Lance Newmark as candidates to be offered a second interview with the team. The 39-year-old will become the youngest Jets GM since Mike Tannenbaum (who is part of The 33rd Team that helped the Jets in their GM and head coaching search) was hired nearly two decades ago.

Mougey rose through the NFL ranks after starting in scouting, and has been with the Broncos since 2012. He survived a regime change in Denver and was promoted to director of player personnel and eventually assistant GM.

A former quarterback and wide receiver at San Diego State, Mougey will have some big decisions to make at both of those positions heading into his first season in New York. Aaron Rodgers may want to play another season, and Mougey will have to decide whether the 41-year-old should be the QB1 in Glenn’s first season as head coach. He also will likely have to work through contract extension talks with star wideout Garrett Wilson.
