It looks like Joe Benigno is going to get his wish.
Zach Wilson is improving, according to Jets head coach Robert Saleh in his Monday press conference, but SNY reports that sources have told Connor Hughes that Joe Flacco will indeed be the starter against Cincinnati next Sunday.
The Jets said a few weeks back that Wilson wouldn’t be back until at least Week 4 against Pittsburgh, and it looks like that timeline remains no matter what.
"He'll take another step up; it’s not going to be much different, but he's still going to be in practice, and he's progressing very well,” Saleh said of Wilson. “We like the way he's moving. We'll ramp him up just a touch more, get to the re-evaluation and make decisions on how he needs to proceed from there."
Flacco earned a lot of, well, flack for a listless offense after Week 1, but then flipped it to praise after going 26-of-4 for 307 yards and four touchdowns, making him the first Jets QB since 2000 to throw for 300 yards and four scores in a game.
“You've got to win a hell of a lot more than one game to cash in on those,” Saleh said when asked about his “receipts” comment after the game.
So, perhaps Flacco will get the Jets to their first winning record since Week 1 of 2018, even if the former No. 2 overall pick is charging hard.
"We are confident that he's looking really good," Saleh added of his second-year signal caller. “Week 4 is the earliest we were given, and he is progressing very well, so we’ll see.”
