According to RADIO.COM MLB insider Jon Heyman and the New York Post’s Joel Sherman, the Yankees are in agreement with RHP Darren O’Day on a one-year deal with a mutual option for 2022.
Per the reports, O’Day is guaranteed to make $2.45 million; he’ll get a $1.75 million salary in 2021, and the mutual option carries a $1.4 million salary for 2022 with a $700K buyout – and if O’Day declines, the option becomes a $3.15 million team option.
O’Day, 38, has a 2.51 ERA in 604 career appearances over 13 seasons with the Angels, Mets, Rangers, Orioles, and Mets. Last season, he pitched 16 1/3 innings with the Braves, posting a 1.10 ERA and 22 strikeouts against five walks, but the Braves decided to pay him a $500K buyout rather than pick up his $3.5 million option for 2021.
The signing gives the Yankees another right-handed arm to replace the traded Adam Ottavino, and also, the $2.45 million O’Day will count against the luxury tax still leaves the Yankees $5.7 million of what they saved by dealing Ottavino to Boston to make further additions.
