BT is fired up for his Yankees to begin the 2024 season, but Sal says, if he were a Yankee fan, he would be disappointed in the winter so far.
“I’m underwhelmed,” Sal said. “This was supposed to be a big offseason for the Mets and Yankees…the Yankees, they said all in. that was supposed to be their MO.
“They make the trade for [Juan] Soto and they followed it up with nothing. If I’m a Yankee fan, I’m disappointed that they didn’t go over the top to cement the all-in offseason.”
Sal says the Yankees trading for Soto, while calling their 82-80 finish in 2023 a “disaster” signified that they were all in on turning things around in 2024. But, based on reports and where players ultimately signed, it seems like the Bombers were never serious on any of the big-name free agents that would have filled clear areas of need.
“I don’t think the Yankees are gonna be a bad team…but their message was all in,” Sal said. “They went and got Soto. That is an all-in move…however, all in is not ‘we can’t get Yamamoto, we don’t want to extend for $325 for Yamamoto, so we’re gonna offer Blake Snell something we know he’s not gonna take.’ I question if they really wanted Yamamoto or Blake Snell…I don’t think they really wanted them.
“I think the number got so ridiculous that they were like ‘$300 million is absurd.’ Point is, they didn’t extend…sometimes to go all in, you have to give a little more than you think the value is.”
