When it came time for his pregame press conference Tuesday afternoon, Yankees manager Aaron Boone had yet to talk to Joey Gallo about being dealt to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
But when asked if he had a message for Gallo, this is what Boone said:
“First and foremost thank you. And obviously, look – it’s been a touch calendar year for him. I have a lot of respect for him and how he worked and carried himself, who he was in that room. I think a lot of us really feel for the situation he was in, and the burden he felt he carried, and I think a lot of us – myself included – very much hope he recaptures what we all know he’s capable of doing. I’ll truly be rooting for him from afar.”
The Yankees sent Gallo to L.A. for No. 15 Dodgers prospect Clayton Beeter, a righty who was the No. 66 pick in the 2020 Draft and had a 5.75 ERA in 51 2/3 innings at Double-A Tulsa.
Gallo, who was acquired last July 29, finished his 140-game Yankees career with a .159/.291/.368 slash line, 25 home runs, 46 RBI, 77 walks, 194 strikeouts, and an 85 OPS+ in 501 plate appearances – a line that Michael Kay noted as “the worst 501 plate appearances in Yankees history” during Tuesday’s YES Network pregame show.
