The New York Yankees indeed activated RHP Clay Holmes from the 15-day injured list ahead of Monday’s series opener in Anaheim, and also added outfielder Tim Locastro from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Marwin Gonzalez was placed on the paternity list to open one spot, and the team had optioned RHP Luke Bard to Triple-A after Sunday’s loss in Oakland.
Holmes spent the minimum 15 days on the IL after going on the list on August 14 due to back spasms. He was an All-Star this year and became the Yankees' closer after a dominant first half, but he posted an 8.22 ERA in 7 1/3 innings in the second half before being deactivated.
Locastro is now in his fifth stint with the Yankees, and he has hit .176 in 34 at-bats. Gonzalez is hitting .200 with three homers and 11 RBI in 130 at-bats this season, and he has seen time at all four infield spots, as well as in right field and left field.
Gonzalez can spend up to three days on the paternity list, so it’s possible that because Locastro cannot be sent back to Triple-A again without clearing waivers, Gonzalez will not return until rosters expand to 28 on Sept. 1 (which is a Yankees off-day) and Locastro stays with the team the rest of the way.
Bard was claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay on August 5 and spent two weeks in Triple-A before being called up on August 21. He finally made his Yankees debut Sunday, pitching a scoreless inning in the team’s loss to Oakland.
