Yankees option Deivi Garcia to minors, making Domingo German likely fifth starter

It looks like Domingo German will be the Yankees’ fifth starter when the season begins next week.

The team announced on Friday that Deivi Garcia had been optioned to Triple-A, likely paving the way for German to round out the rotation to begin the 2021 campaign. Garcia had looked sharp overall in spring training but was roughed up in his last outing, giving up four runs in two innings, including two home runs, against the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Garcia overall allowed 12 hits and six earned runs over 14 innings this spring.

German, pitching in his first game action with the Yankees since serving an 81-game suspension for violating the league’s domestic abuse policy, has tossed nine shutout innings with 13 strikeouts. His recent performance coupled with his efficient 2019 before the domestic violence incident likely won him the job to start the season.

The Yankees rotation, while not finalized yet by Aaron Boone, will likely consist of Gerrit Cole, Jameson Taillon, Corey Kluber, Jordan Montgomery and German.

Garcia has two minor league options remaining, per FanGraphs.
