DETROIT (WWJ) -- An investigation is under way after an ATV crash on Detroit's west side left a 38-year-old man dead.
Detroit police say the man was riding his ATV at a high speed in the area of Burt Road and Grand River Avenue Wednesday night when he hit a curb and was flung from the vehicle, hitting a building.
The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He was identified at the scene as Victor “Vee” Andre Davis, a father of five and collision shop owner who liked to ride ATVs.
Six other riders fled the scene; officers did not chase them. Police say no weapons were involved and no arrests were made.
The incident happened just one day after Detroit police conducted a raid, seizing ATV and dirt bikes that many across the city have been illegally riding on city streets.
Police Chief James Craig said Wednesday the seizure was "very important" for the safety of Detroit.
"There's been a total disregard for law. Taunting the police, taking over city streets, it's not acceptable," Craig said. "Many of them think that because we've instituted a no-chase policy that 'we'll just taunt the police, then we're going to run and they're not going to chase us.' Well that's not how it's going to work."
Further details about the incident have not been released. An investigation is ongoing.
