(WWJ) A 2-year-old child was rushed to the hospital by his father after he grabbed an unattended handgun and shot himself in the hand in Macomb County on Monday, the Macomb County Sheriff's Department said in a press release.
It happened at Westbridge Manor mobile home park in Macomb Township at about 10:30 a.m.. Monday.
Several other people, including an adult and other children, were home when it happened, police said.
Interestingly, the rear window of a car passing eastbound on Hall Road was shot out and the driver thought the bullet came from the mobile home park. Police are investigating whether the two things are related. The driver of the vehicle was uninjured.
"This appears to be a very unfortunate incident that could have easily been deadly," Macomb Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said in a press release. "Possessing a weapon is a great responsibility that comes with many risks, especially when children are involved. Please do not leave weapons anywhere that a child can access it, even for a second.
The child is in stable condition, and the family has been cooperative, the sheriff added.
