Five Children Pulled From Raging House Fire In Detroit, Smallest In Cardiac Arrest

(WWJ) Detroit firefighters responded Thursday morning to a raging house fire on Otsego, near Joy Road and I-96, that injured at least five children, one critically.

Deputy Commissioner Dave Fornell tells Newsradio 950 that five kids  — all siblings — have been taken to the hospital. A 3-year-old girl was listed in critical condition, suffering from cardiac arrest.


Four other children will also hospitalized with smoke inhilation— boys aged 10, 9 and 6 years old, along with a 5-year-old girl.

When firefighters arrived, three people were hanging froman upper floor and were rescued by first responders on ladders. The smallest child was trapped inside and freed by firefighters who transported her to the hospital. 

The children's mother —25 years old — refused treatment on the scene.

The fire began around 7 a.m. and the cause is yet unknown. Arson investigators were still knocking down the blaze more than an hour after they arrived on scene.
