(WWJ) What started as a group of people arguing at a mobile home park in Sterling Heights ended with a man being shot by police multiple times.

Officers said when they responded to the call at 3:30 a.m. Monday, they were directed to a specific address, in the 40000 block of Bonaparte Ave. near Van Dyke and Utica Rd,, where neighbors reported they heard a disturbance.

"It was an argument," neighbor Chuck Maxon told WWJ's Vickie Thomas. "He kept saying he was gonna hurt her, but used a lot of expletives on it, you know? And she was screaming something back hysterically."

Police arrived and saw a man exit a home with a firearm drawn, they say, and police shot the man.

The suspect, who was struck multiple times by more than one officer, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

"No other bystanders or officers were injured during this incident which is still under investigation," police said in a press release, adding that per protocol when it comes to officer-involved shootings, Michigan State Police were called in to investigate the incident.

"When something like this happens, it often involves decisions that are made in less than a second," said Sterling Heights Police Chief said Dale Dwojakowski.

Dwojakowski said officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave while State Police are looking into the matter.

He would not reveal any information about the suspect at this time, including his age or where he lives.

MSP First Lt. Mike Shaw later said that a long gun was recovered at the scene.

As far as the investigation, Shaw said that is just getting underway.

"We're basically staring from scratch like we would in any other investigation; looking for videotapes, talking to witnesses, talking to citizens around here," Shaw said.

Late in the morning a warrant was obtained, and technicians with the MSP Crime Lab were called in to process the scene.
