Crime Alert On U of M Campus After Man Attacked In The Arb

(WWJ) A crime alert has been issued at the University of Michigan after a bizarre incident at about 1:30 Wednesday morning.

The Public Safety office says a man was sitting on a bench in the Nichols Arboretum, a large well-known park just outside central campus where students, staff and local residents jog and stroll on Washington Heights Street, when someone came up behind him and hit him with a glass bottle.

The perpetrator followed it up by jamming a plastic air soft-type gun in the victim's neck.

The victim told police instead of freezing in fear he punched the suspect, knocking him to the ground before running away.

The Public Safety Department is investigating.

The scant description says the suspect was wearing a red-hooded sweatshirt and had tattoos on his forearms. The scene of the attack is one of the most idyllic spots in Ann Arbor, a place known for peace and quiet, wildflowers and walking paths among rolling hills.
