DETROIT (WWJ) -- Crime Stoppers of Michigan is offering a cash reward up to $2,500 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for shooting and killing a three-year-old boy on the Southfield Freeway Thursday night.
While riding in the back seat of his godmother's Dodge Journey along northbound M-39 around 7:30 p.m., Christian Miller was struck by a bullet between the shoulder blades. He underwent emergency surgery but died at the hospital on Friday.
Authorities released surveillance footage of what they believe is a 2014-2016 Mercedes that pulled up alongside the victim's vehicle and fired a single shot.
Police say the child's godmother, who was not injured in the shooting, was not involved in a road rage incident and they do not know the motive behind the shooting. Following the shooting, she pulled off the freeway at the Plymouth Road exit and into a BP gas station and a relative called 911.
Crime Stoppers is asking for the public's help in solving the case, offering the cash reward for anyone who can provide anonymous tips that lead to an arrest. All callers will remain anonymous.
Crime Stoppers does not wait for a conviction when paying rewards -- cash will be paid when an arrest is made.
Tips can be submitted by calling 1-800-SPEAK-UP, visiting the Crime Stoppers website or texting CSM and your tip to 274637.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Police Chief James Craig will be on-hand for a press conference with Crime Stoppers and Christian Miller's family to address the case Monday at 1 p.m. at the Crime Stoppers of Michigan headquarters on 9 Mile Road in Southfield.
