Damaging Storms, Tornado Possible Friday Night In Metro Detroit

(WWJ) A dark and stormy night may be on tap for southeast Michigan, as AccuWeather and the National Weather Service say there is a potential for severe thunderstorms.

The day will start with sunshine, and the probability of storms runs from 5 p.m. Friday through 2 a.m. Saturday morning.

The main hazards will be wind gusts of up to 65 miles per hour, along with heavy rain, hail and the possibility of an isolated tornado.

Forecasters say the greatest threat for severe storm follows a line from Detroit to Lansing and south.

"Any of the thunderstorms from overnight could have flooding downpours," AccuWeather's Dean DeVore said.

Meteorologists say storm watchers should watch radar over Iowa and Wisconsin today, as the storms will spring up there and move east, before switching direction to east-southeast over Lake Michigan.

Once the storms move through, it should be a relatively quiet Saturday, with a possibility for light rain in the afternoon. And then Sunday should bring the return of sunny skies.
