DETROIT (WWJ) -- It's a historic day in Southwest Detroit. The Gordie Howe International Bridge is officially open to traffic this afternoon (7/27).
Construction on the nearly $5 billion bridge began eight yeas ago, and after months of delays.
Designed with six traffic lanes, 16 toll lanes, and 60 Canada and US inspection lanes, officials say the bridge will provide "efficient, safe and secure processing" for both commercial and passenger vehicles.
Be advised if you're going to be in the area: Michigan State Police officials said they expect much heavier than normal traffic, as thousands of people gather for the bridge opening.
"Whether you’re attending the opening events or simply traveling through the area, please plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and be patient with fellow motorists," a MSP Second District spokesman said.
For everyone’s safety, police advise the following:
- Do not stop on the bridge or exit your vehicle unless directed by law enforcement.
- Follow all posted traffic signs and message boards.
- Obey posted speed limits and drive for current traffic conditions.
- Stay focused on the road and put distractions away.
- Buckle up, every trip, every time.
- Follow the directions of law enforcement and traffic control personnel.
What to know if you plan to cross
- On the U.S. side, the only entrance and exit to the bridge is along I-75 in Southwest Detroit. Signs are posted.
- The bridge will be open to vehicle traffic only at around 12 p.m. Monday. A toll-free multi-use path for walkers and cyclists will open on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 8 a.m.
- The toll rate for a personal vehicle is $5.75 USD. It costs a little more for commercial vehicles.
- People who cross regularly can also sign up for the Breakaway Program, designed for both businesses and commuters. Those who sign up will get tag to attach to their vehicle that automatically deducts from a prepaid account or charges to a business account as you drive through — eliminating the need for cash or cards. Breakaway members will pay between $4.35 and $6.90 to cross.
