Detroit Considers Cutting $45 Parking Fine In Half, But Just For Residents

(WWJ) Detroiters may get a break when it comes to fines for parking tickets, paying half the price if they submit payment within five days.

But the plan would leave suburbanites in the cold.

The City Council is considering the proposal, which would cut the $45 fine in half if residents pay within five days of receiving a ticket. Users of the program would have to have a car registered to an address inside the city. Working in town would not make anyone eligible for the discount.

Councilwoman Mary Sheffield tells the Detroit News the proposal would provide relief for low-income residents needing to come downtown to do business or take part in activities.

"It continues to be a barrier for Detroit residents, especially low-income residents needing to come downtown and transact business and partake in activities," Sheffield said. "This will provide some relief."

Notably, Detroiters also pay significantly higher costs for auto insurance than suburban residents.

A public hearing on the issue is scheduled for June 24th.
