DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit man has been ordered held without bond in the fatal road rage beating of a man from Berkley.

Lawrence Davis, 23, appeared via video in 36th District Court Wednesday on a charge of open murder, and was remanded into custody in the Wayne County Jail.

"Meanwhile," Thomas reported, "a woman identifying herself as the aunt of Davis says that this was all an accident, and accidents happen."

Wingate, who grew up in the suburbs and had recently moved to the city, was driving northbound on Livernois Ave. in Detroit, sometime after 1 a.m. on July 22,  when he was involved in what's been described as a minor crash with another vehicle. Wingate and his passenger got out of the car and walked into a gas station parking lot where it's alleged that Davis, 23, struck Wingate in the head. After he fell, according to Detroit police, Davis continued to assault him, ultimately killing him with a kick to the head.

Davis fled the scene on foot and evaded police until he was tracked to an 8 Mile Rd. apartment and arrested.
