DETROIT (WWJ) -- For years, Michigan drivers have been able to show off their school spirit with customized license plates featuring logos of the state's many univesities.

Now, fans of Detroit's four pro sports teams can do the same.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced Tuesday at Little Casears Arena drivers will now be able to purchase the plates, with net proceeds benefitting each team's charitable foundation.

Benson brought in some star power for the news conference, with Tigers legend Al Kaline, former Lions wide receiver Herman Moore, former Piston Earl Cureton and Stanley Cup-winning goalie Chris Osgood representing the Red Wings.

Osgood says he loves the idea.

"I’ll be getting one, for sure, the next time my plates come up," Osgood told WWJ's Jon Hewett. "My daughters will be laughing about that, but it’s a cool idea."

Kaline said he doesn't have his personal plate picked out yet:

"I don’t want too many people to know who this old guy is driving," Kaline said with a laugh.

Plates will cost $35 to purchase, with $25 going to each team's foundation, as will the annual $10 renewal fee.

The plates will be issued with a random combination of letters and numbers,  but fans who want a personalized plate can check if the custom configuration they want is available using the Secretary of State’s ExpressSOS.com. All pro sports team plates are limited to five digits.

Benson said it's an "extraordinary opportunity" to be able to help the team's foundations.

"I’ve worked firsthand with these foundations in other capacities prior to taking office, so I’ve seen how much work they do in the community," Benson said.
