(WWJ) As Detroit teachers head back to the bargaining table, the president of the teacher's union says they remain underpaid for the challenges they face daily.

Detroit Federation of Teachers President Terrence Martin says the largest school district in the state of Michigan -- and the one with the largest population of low-income students -- wants their union to endorse a political candidate to help them get what they need.

"This is an important election that's coming up that's really going to set the stage for what our country is going to look like, we certainly seen what divisiveness has done and we look forward to having someone who is going to be inclusive," Martin said.

He added the union plans be active this election season in a range of ways - from a endorsing a candidate for president to politicking ahead of the city's upcoming school board elections.

Separate from the power of politics, talks on a new contract are set to begin within a few weeks, Martin said, and at the top of their list are pay raises.

"We're cautiously optimistic, we know our folks deserve it," Martin said.
