SPRINGFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - Authorities say a 75-year-old man died when he crashed along I-75 in northern Oakland County.

The crash happened just after 5 a.m. Tuesday along southbound I-75 near East Holly Road in Springfield Township.

Michigan State Police troopers arrived on the scene and found the driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee in very critical condition. He was declared dead soon after.

It appears the man, a Davisburg resident, slammed into a guardrail. Other circumstances surrounding the crash weren't immediately clear.

The freeway was closed for several hours while troopers were investigating the scene, but has since reopened to traffic.
