Elderly Couple Found Dead In Garage, Trying To Flee Van Buren Twp House Fire

(WWJ) A couple in their 70s tried to escape a fire tearing through their house in Van Buren Township early Thursday morning through the garage.

But they couldn't make it out, WWJ's Charlie Langton reported. Both died.

The house fire on Lilac near, near Belleville Road, burned large parts of the dwelling down to a smoldering shell.

"Obviously the fire started at the back of the house," Langton said, surveying the scene. "It's so sad."

The blaze burned to hot that aerial truck had to be brought in to knock down the flames.

The cause appears to be accidental, a firefighter told WDIV-TV, adding, "It appears that they were attempting to leave the residence, they were trying to get out. Whether they were going to leave in the car, whether they were just trying to open the garage door ... from where the fire was at and where they were at, they were at the furthest point they could be from the fire. And they were wearing sleeping attire, so it looks like they were trying to leave."

A neighbor told Langton the couple had been married more than 30 years, had adult children, and were, "very, very nice people, very nice parents."
