DETROIT (WWJ) - The world of dance competitions is the focus of a new Netflix movie titled "Work It."
I decided to watch the movie because, quite frankly, I needed an escape from real-world issues, and I was looking for something that would take me away from all that -- and that's just what I got with this movie. It opens on a high note with an upbeat dance number featuring The Thunderbirds, an award-winning high school dance troupe.
High school senior Quinn Ackerman, played by actress and singer Sabrina Carpenter, is desperate to get into Duke University. But, standing between her and the college of her dreams is The Thunderbirds leader and top dancer, Juilliard. Yes, he's named himself after the storied performing arts conservatory in New York.
While the movie focuses on the intense competition to get into the Work It dance competition and come out on top, it's also about dance being a universal language, as the movie features a diverse cast from all around the world. It's also about taking chances, believing in yourself and others, and not trying to fit in, but doing what really makes you happy. In other words, dancing to your own beat.
Work It is now streaming on Netflix.
