PONTIAC, Mich. (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway after an independent film crew stumbled across a decomposing body Wednesday morning.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Department says deputies responded to the area of Lake Street and Gillespie Avenue around 11:30 a.m. on the report of a deceased person located in a vacant field.
Officials say a large group of people were in the area filming an independent movie when one of the crew members complained of a rotting smell in the area. One of the individuals began looking for the source of the smell and found the decomposing remains of a human body under a large pile of tree branches.
The sheriff's department says the branches appeared to have been purposely placed over the victim in an attempt to hide the body.
Detectives and an investigator from the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office responded to the scene to begin their investigation. The OCSO Forensic Science Laboratory is assisting with the investigation.
The Medical Examiner's Office took custody of the victim and an autopsy has been scheduled.
The investigation remains open.
