DETROIT (WWJ) -- The long wait continues for the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, connecting Windsor and Detroit.

The Trump administration hit the brakes on the opening after claiming our Canadian neighbors were not properly compensating the U S. for the bridge,

Visiting the WWJ Newsradio 950 studios on Thursday, former Governor Rick Snyder said President Trump is way off base on the topic.

Snyder, during his administration, was integral in brokering the deal to build the bridge.

"I think President Trump got a lot of misinformation," Snyder told WWJ's Jackie Paige. "The Marouns (who own the Ambassador Bridge) have been donors. They're giving information to the Trump Administration that gets passed on to the president.. Most of that information isn't accurate."

"The bridge should open! The bridge is a great asset and resource that will create jobs, make our economy in Michigan stronger and better, and help our entire nation — in addition to our partners in Canada," Snyder said. "The Canadians have been wonderful partners; they paid for this bridge. Michigan didn't put up a dime."

Snyder said point of the bridge was never to turn a profit, but to better connect our two countries, for the benefit of both.

"Theoretically, we get money back after everything's repaid," Snyder said, "but I don't recall any bridge ever being bult in Michigan with the intention to say we're gonna make a profit on this bridge, versus just saying this bridge is important to create jobs and relationships and to join our two countries together in a better fashion."

There is still no official opening date for the bridge.

Bridge officials have said that safety checks and testing are in their final stages.

The purpose of Snuder's visit to WWJ was to promote something else he's been working on: "The 2026 Michigan Roadmap: Bridging Opportunity and Accountability. Snyder says it's a 10-point plan aimed at turning the state around, and has been provided to all the gubernatorial candidates in Michigan. Learn more]
