(WWJ) In the second mass shooting this week, police are investigating a shooting on Detroit's east side that left five people injured.
WWJ's Mike Campbell reports a 27 year old and 26 year old women were shot behind the DNC's Rental Hall at about midnight, in addition to three men, ages 21, 35 and 34.
They're in stable condition. Why they were shot and who pulled the trigger is still a mystery.
This is the second multiple shooting in Detroit, after six people were shot at the Sting Gentleman's Club earlier this week. In that incident the motive is also unknown, although WWJ's Charlie Langton said some reported an altercation of some kind inside led to the shooting outside.
"An unknown suspect fired multiple shots into the crowd," Langton said.
Detroit police are asking anyone with information on the latest shooting to call them at 313-596-5900.
These shootings come amid an uptick in violence across the United States' largest cities. CNN reported that from May to June 2020, homicides in 20 major US cities increased by 37%, led by Chicago, Philadelphia and Milwaukee, according to new data from the nonpartisan Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ) think tank. Homicides alone are up 50% n Chicago. Aggravated assaults jumped by 35% nationwide over the same period of time, while other types of crime were down.
Detroit police say they're dealing with a record number of gun arrests and a spike in violent crime in the city.
Police Chief James Craig says more than 500 illegal guns were removed from the streets over the course of four weeks in June and July in Detroit.
