(WWJ) As more people head back to work following coronavirus lock downs, gas prices are rising alongside commute times.
AAA Michigan says prices were up six cents over the past week to an average of 2.11 per gallon.
That's higher than it has been in recent weeks, but still below the norm: Prices are 61 cents lower per gallon than they were a year ago.
Analysts say the prices are going up because the demand for gas continues to increase as businesses re-open and more people are going back to the office.
Motorists are paying an average of $32 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; a discount of $12 from when prices were their highest last July.
"If demand continues to trend higher, motorists will likely see pump prices continue to increase through the end of the month," said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA - The Auto Club Group.
Most expensive gas price averages: Marquette ($2.18), Jackson ($2.16), Benton Harbor ($2.15); Least expensive gas price averages: Traverse City ($1.93), Flint ($2.07), Ann Arbor ($2.11)
