DETROIT (WWJ) - The racing action at the Detroit Grand Prix on Belle Isle came to a screeching halt for a couple hours Saturday as a severe thunderstorm passed through the area.

All Grand Prix events were suspended just after 2:30 p.m. after the lightning-packed storm approached the island. Those under cover were asked to shelter in place as the majority of fans were ushered off Belle Isle on shuttles that took them back to parking lots on the mainland.

Just after 4:30, Michigan State Police said officials got the "all clear" to resume racing and began allowing fans back onto the island via shuttle.

Race organizers said all fans will be permitted to re-enter with ticket stubs from Saturday and return to their seats. Racing resumed at 4:55 p.m.
