How Often Do You Touch Your Face Amid Coronavirus Fears? This Video May Surprise You

(WWJ) Coronavirus fears have swept the globe, with people clearing off the shelves of local supermarkets and debating whether they should work from home to avoid possible contamination.

While people debate whether to wear face masks out in public, health officials say simple precautions are still the best: Wash your hands and don't touch your face.

Turns out that may not be as easy to do as you think: A study published by the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene studied 10 people for three hours in a room by themselves. On average, they touched their faces 15.7 times per hour.

How hard is it not to touch your face during an average workday? We tested it out with WWJ Middays anchor Brooke Allen.

A hidden camera in the studio told the story, and answered the question: How many times did she touch her face?

Watch the video. You may be shocked at the results.

So, why does it matter? Experts say coronavirus can be transmitted two ways. Through an infected person who coughs or sneezes near you; And according to The Hill, the virus can also live for at least nine hours, and possibly days, on a hard surface. That means you can contact coronavirus by touching a desk, a table, a counter at the grocery store -- anything -- and then scratching your nose, rubbing an eye or touching your mouth.
