Late Monday, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources announced that someone found the light-colored Oru kayak on May 21 near New Buffalo in southwestern Michigan, about 18 miles from where Sandy was last seen. The person later contacted law enforcement after they saw an image of Sandy's kayak.
Sandy is originally from Birmingham and moved to South Bend about eight months ago after graduating from Hope College in Holland, Michigan.
A search continues, as authorities are treating this as a missing persons case. Sandy is described as 5'11'' tall and around 150 lbs, with brown hair and blue eyes.
