
DETROIT (WWJ) - A shootout involving police turns deadly near Wayne State University in Detroit.
The incident unfolded after university police received a report around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday about a man on a bicycle firing a gun in the area of 3rd Avenue and Peterboro, not far from the Lodge Freeway and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
Officers arrived on the scene and the encountered the suspect, who began to fire at them. Officers then returned fire, fatally striking the suspect.
At this point, it's not clear who the suspect was, why he was firing the gun or what led to the exchange of gunfire with officers. No one else was injured.
The officer involved in the shooting is a four-year veteran of the force. He has been placed on administrative duty.
The incident remains under investigation.
