(WWJ) He appeared to be following proper safety precautions by wearing a helmet, but the Lake County Sheriff's Office said the rider of a dirt bike died this weekend when his head was impaled by a stick.

The dirt bike crash happened just before 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the area of S. Jenks Road and W. Centerline Road in Peacock Township, near Ludington.

Responding deputies found the operator of the dirt bike, Dacota Frederick Rowe, 22, of Manistee, seriously injured.

Rowe's head had been impaled by a stick despite the fact he had been wearing a helmet that was equipped with a face shield, deputies said.

Rowe was transported by ambulance to the hospital where he later died.

It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash. This incident is still under investigation.

"Such a terrible tragedy, prayers for family and friends," Cheri Spencer wrote on the Lake County Sheriff's Department post about the tragedy on Facebook.
