WWJ -- More than 2,200 pets now have new forever homes.
With adoption fees at just $25, Bissell Pet Foundation picked up the remaining adoption costs during its nationwide Empty the Shelters event on Saturday. Nearly 120 animal shelters across 20 states participated in the event, helping pets in need of a second chance find a new home.
In a Facebook post, Bissell Pet Foundation says by adopting on Empty the Shelters Day, the new pet owners helped save two lives -- the pet they adopted and the pet that now has a place in the shelter.
"Days like these truly make our dream a reality," the post said.
Saturday's event was the third national event since the foundation began holding Empty the Shelters events in April 2017. The foundation's website says just over 19,000 pets have been adopted since May 2016.
Many pet owners who participated in Saturday's event took to social media to share photos of their new fur babies.
While another Empty the Shelters Day is in the books, Bissell Pet Foundation is pleading: don't stop here.
"Please share the word about adoption. Help us show people the incredible shelter pets in your life. Every pet deserves a home and we will keep working until this goal is achieved," their Facebook post said.
The foundation has not yet announced a date for the next event, but 2018 saw two national events -- one in May and one in October.
