DETROIT (WWJ) -- Detroit police detectives recovered what they believe to be cremated remains from inside an abandoned funeral home on the city's northwest side Wednesday evening.

Police executed a search warrant around 6 p.m. at the vacant Howell Funeral Home in the 15000 block of Dexter Avenue and reportedly found at least seven sets of cremated remains in the basement.

While police could not comment on the investigation, the Detroit News reports that investigators got a tip from "an urban explorer" who discovered several boxes of cremains inside the old building, which has been closed for several years.

It is unclear when the Howell Funeral Home closed, but several boxes indicate the remains are 15-25 years old, according to The News.

The discovery comes amid an investigation into multiple funeral homes in the Metro Detroit area after police found the cremated remains of 10 fetuses, an infant and several other people in a false ceiling inside the shuttered Cantrell Funeral Home last October.

That discovery led police to find the remains of more than 200 people at a funeral home in Grosse Pointe Park within weeks of the initial discovery. The remains of more than 60 were found inside the Perry Funeral Home in late October.
