(WWJ) Kenyel Brown, the man police believe is responsible for six murders and numerous carjackings in the metro Detroit area was taken into custody after a dramatic scene in Oak Park Monday afternoon.
The situation began when the manager of an adult bookstore, near 8 Mile and Coolidge along the border of Detroit and Oak Park, recognized Brown, 40, in his store and called police.
Officers responded and found Brown jumping fences between backyards.
Pursuing officers heard a single gunshot and it turned out Brown had shot himself in the head.
"He fired one single shot," Detroit Police Chief James Craig told the media in a press conference Monday afternoon.
Brown was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition, Craig said. No one else was injured during the incident.
"Certainly, this could have been a very tragic situation," Craig said.
U.S. Marshals had also been searching for Brown in connection with multiple homicide cases. Craig says Brown was linked to at least six murders -- three of which happened Downriver. Craig says Brown was wanted in connection with a murder back in January, as well as a triple shooting in early February that left two people dead.
He had also been sought for a murder in Highland Park and two in Detroit, the most recent of which happened early Saturday morning near a vacant building on Minnesota near John R., on Detroit's east side.
He was also wanted for two recent carjackings in Detroit, according to the police chief.
After Brown shot himself Monday, Craig says medics had to use lifesaving measures to bring him back. He lost his pulse on multiple occasions, but was kept alive and brought to a nearby hospital.
A reward of up to $10,000 was being offered for information that leads to an arrest in this case. It's not yet known if the bookstore owner can collect the money.
