(WWJ) A 5-year-old girl is being treated for a gunshot wound to the head after her younger sibling got a hold of a gun.

The girl was alert and conscious when she was taken to a local hospital early Monday morning, according to Redford Township police, and was last reported in stable condition.

The shooting, at around 2 a.m., is believed to have been an accident.

Police Captain Al DePrima said an investigation found that the victim's 4-year-old brother was the one who fired the shot — although details including how or where he found the gun, are not yet clear.

The weapon was recovered from the scene.

"The parents are cooperating in the investigation; no foul play is suspected," Di Prima told WWJ Newsradio 950's Ron Dewey. "But obviously I would urge any responsible gun owners to have their guns secured."

Di Prima said the children's parents are cooperating with investigators, and no one was arrested.

He said the investigation, when complete, will be forwarded to the prosecutors' office for possible charges.

No names were released.
